What is Modern Lighting?

The term “modern” may insinuate that the style was founded in the current day, but that’s far from the truth! Modern style had its roots in the 1920’s and had a long stretch of popularity throughout the mid and late 1900’s. Ever since the beginning, modern style as a whole has an emphasis on streamlining design and functionality. Straight lines and geometric shapes often make appearances in modern design, but never at the cost of sophistication. In fact, a goal of modern lighting is to add an air of sophistication and timeless class through simple, minimal design. The symmetry and orderly presentation of modern lights helps them create an uncluttered, orderly tone to whatever room they’re used in.

When did Modern Style First Become Popular?

Modern style originally emerged at the beginning of the 1920’s out of the art deco movement. It was a product of its time as it reacted to modern art and other styles like German Bauhaus and Scandinavian design, which both had an appreciation for combining art and functionality. Modern style did begin to transform after the conclusion of World War II though as architects and designers began to add more ornamentation and decor back into their homes while still working with the materials and shapes associated with modern style. This popular branch of modern style is known as mid century modern. 

Why does Modern Continue to be a Popular Style?

Because of the emphasis on clean lines, minimalism, natural materials, and a monochromatic color palette, modern style is one that is considered timeless. Its key properties allow it to avoid any tacky trends like the bold colors of vintage styles or the extremely ornate details of Victorian designs. Modern style as a whole is one that is accessible to the common man through its approachability and simplicity. 

However, these are not the only reasons modern style continues to be popular. The base principles of modern style make it a very flexible style that melds well with others. Consider modern farmhouse, modern boho, and other styles that take advantage of modern style’s foundations and expand on them by melding it with different styles. 

What are Iconic Brands of Modern Lighting?

Within the modern lighting world, there are many brands known for their own iconic spins on the style. Some of these brands are Moooi, Herman Miller, Artemide, FLOS, WAC Lighting, and Visual Comfort. Each brand has their own unique take on modern design and finds inventive ways to use shapes, lines, and materials to create their own aesthetic. While some brands collaborate with designers from outside their brand to bring in fresh perspectives, other brands focus on developing an internal team of designers to create lights fitting with the company’s aesthetic. In both cases, there are many notable designers in the lighting world. 

Who are Iconic Designers of Modern Lighting?

One of the most iconic designers of modern style is George Nelson, who infamously created the George Nelson Bubble Lamps. Other iconic modern lighting designers include Achille and Pier Castiglioni, Thomas O’Brien, Sean Lavin, Tom Dixon, and Louis Poulsen. Since modern design as a whole was revolutionary and a huge part of American culture during and after World War II, there are hundreds of iconic designers who emerged during this time and transformed not only the design world but the world of lighting as well. 

Why Choose Modern Lighting Over Other Styles? 

Simply put, modern lighting has a transcendent style that makes it timeless and applicable in the modern day. Its base principle focusing on minimalism and functionality allows this style to fit into life in the 21st century and flourish - especially when it is combined with other styles. While other lighting styles may feel dated or unattainable, modern lighting is not one of those styles. Modern lighting continues to be accessible and beautiful even so many years after its origin and development. 

What's the Difference Between Modern Vs. Contemporary Light Fixtures?

Oftentimes, the terms “modern” and “contemporary” are used interchangeably. That being said, they are technically two different styles. Modern style is a style of the past while contemporary is specifically of the time that it is in right now. Contemporary style tends to lean more towards an appreciation of abstract and contemporary artwork and bursts of unexpected design, so their lighting fixtures may not be as symmetrical, uniform, or as minimal as modern light fixtures. 

Does Modern Work for Any Home?

Fortunately, modern style is extremely versatile and pairs well with other styles. Some of the most popular iterations of modern style are modern rustic, modern coastal, transitional (a combination of modern and traditional styles), and modern industrial. Although there are many ways to blend modern style with other interior design branches, lighting is one key area that can personify that melding of styles. 

Depending on what style you wish to blend with modern, you may vary your light’s finish to be metallic, matte, or another color. The shape of your light and how it uses lines, curves, and other geometric shapes will also influence how modern the light feels. 

Are Modern Lighting Fixtures Expensive?

There are many luxurious styles of modern lighting fixtures that are more expensive than others. Oftentimes, these lights are more expensive because of the light’s material, hand crafted designs, and/or size. This is just a small branch of modern lighting though, as there are a plethora of options that are more affordable. When seeking affordable modern lighting fixtures, it is key to consider the materials that are used, how it is made, and the technology used in the light (for example, smart lighting fixtures, fixtures with remotes, and so on).

How are Mid-Century Modern and Modern Lighting Different?

Mid century modern is a facet of modern design that became popular between 1945 and 1975. Stylistically, mid century modern lighting does have some similarities to modern style through its use of materials and shapes. One of the largest differences though is that while modern style tends to be more minimal with decorative accents and curves, mid century modern lights tend to be busier and more decorative. In general, mid century modern lights tend to feel more artistic while still not adapting any maximalist design philosophies and feeling overly cluttered.
