Moooi was originally founded in 2001 by designers Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers. The name itself comes from a Dutch word “mooi,” which defines the concept of beauty itself. However, Wanders and Vissers added an extra “O” to the term to distinguish the brand and word from another and to hint at the extra beauty and uniqueness that their brand would create.
The style of these two visionaries is very anti-conventional as they strive to create exclusive, unique lighting fixtures. Even in the midst of that goal, the designers work to create pieces that convey a playful tone and exude a bold personality. By designing with these goals in mind and focusing on melding antique and contemporary designs, Moooi truly does have something extra to give to the lighting industry.
Although the two founders of the company remain some of the most iconic designers at Moooi, they are not the company’s only designers. Over forty designers are credited to work with Moooi to craft those unconventional, stylish lighting fixtures. Some of their most famous designers include Arihiro Miyake, Claire Vos, Freshwest design duo, Studio Job, Bertjan Pot, and Rive Roshan. Their designers often come from different backgrounds in the design world and various cultures. This diverse culture allows Moooi Lighting designers to collaborate with one another, challenge one another, and ultimately create truly unique lights.
Moooi Lighting designs and creates many favorite lighting types. Their wall sconces and wall lights, pendant lights, and chandeliers are favorites for mounted light fixtures. However, table lamps and floor lamps are popular alternatives for rooms where mounting lights may not be feasible or preference dictates the use of smaller lights.
Currently, many of Moooi’s most popular lighting collections are created by designer Bertjan Pot. His collections Heracleum, Random, Non Random, and Prop are some of the most lauded fixtures of the 21st century. Other noteworthy collections include Perch, Raimond, and Gravity. Although each collection features a signature design from the person behind the light, collections can easily be paired to create an aesthetic that stands out to all who share in it.
Although Moooi is a successful lighting company, they are also known for their furniture and accessories. No matter what area of the home Moooi artists are designing for, their collections tend to have an air of rebelliousness and sophistication working in sync to create a piece that is unique, breathtaking, and innovative.
Moooi Lighting is currently based in Breda, Netherlands. Their warehouse is located in the same region, and their flagship showroom and brand store is in Amsterdam’s Jordaan neighborhood. As a brand, they have continued to expand to several showrooms in the world’s most important cities.
