Hammerton Studio Lighting began quite humbly with Levi Wilson at the helm. He first had dreams of attending architectural school, but after a gap year of touring Europe and the West Coast, he found a deep appreciation for the beautiful ironwork of Europe and the rustic ironwork used in the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood. This fascination led him to start his own business to transform metal into functional works of art. The business he began in 1995 was Mountain Moose Designs, a metalworking company that fabricated products for trades. When he was a child, his father had run a blacksmith shop, so Wilson learned those techniques as he grew up and adopted his mother’s attention to delicate artistic detailing as he blended his two favorite mediums of metal and glass into lighting fixtures.
As time passed and Mountain Moose Designs began developing rustic lighting fixtures, they rebranded themselves as Hammerton. The name itself is a rustic combination of “hammer” and “town”, with the hammer being a key part of their production process and “town/ton” a reference to his time exploring towns across Europe.
As Hammerton Studio developed over the years, they put a great emphasis on sculptural design in their lights and the use of glass fabrication to create their signature style. Today, Hammerton Studio Lighting is known for its evolutionary designs and use of metal and glass.
The most iconic designer from Hammerton Studio is Levi Wilson himself, who designed the company’s first lights and has had great influence on the direction of the company’s artistic style. Hammerton’s in-house team of designers work together with one another and Wilson to create functional artwork through their sculptural lighting fixtures.
