Herman Miller begins their story as a furniture manufacturer back in the early 1900’s, when Herman Miller helped his son-in-law D.J. De Pree buy the Michigan Sar Furniture Company in 1923. Pree had been at that company since 1909, and because he held his father-in-law in high esteem, he decided to rename the company after him.
Though the company was founded early in the century, they truly became popular in the middle of the century for hiring designers now associated with the mid century style. Charles and Ray Eames, arguably two of the biggest designers of mid century style, worked with the company to create iconic designs, but they were hardly the only big names to work at Herman Miller.
Regardless, as time went on, Herman Miller continued to adapt to the times with new and innovative styles that fit into industrial, modern, and contemporary styles. While they still create and design furniture, they’re also known for their artful lighting and decor, especially the George Nelson Bubble Lamps.
As stated above, Herman Miller has worked with some hugely important designers. Charles and Ray Eames helped design many iconic mid century furniture pieces like the Eames Soft Pad Chairs, the Molded Plywood Lounge Chair, and their other lounge chair that is a staple of mid century homes. George Nelson and Isamu Noguchi also partnered with Herman Miller and created iconic namesakes like the Noguchi Table and the Nelson Marshmallow Sofa. These three figures were all essential designers and their legacy is embedded in Herman Miller’s history, including its lighting history.
Although George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, and Charles and Ray Eames are often associated with mid century furniture, they also designed and created lighting fixtures that are still in style today.
