In 1947, Nelson was inspired by a white spherical lamp that he saw in his travels. However, this lamp that he desired was made in Sweden, covered in stretched silk, and was too expensive for him to buy and too difficult to reproduce. That is why he decided to design his own light instead. Recalling a newspaper photo of sailing ships being sprayed with a special lacquer for protection in storage, he gained inspiration for an affordable and durable material for his lamps. Within several days, he made a deal with the manufacturer of the spray and created his first bubble lamp prototype.
Aside from this unconventional material, Nelson created a spherical metal cage that would hold its shape under tension. In the end, the lamp required few tools, no welding costs, and an affordable layer of the spray lacquer and a thin layer of plastic. With that, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp became an affordable, easy to produce fixture that was unlike any other.
The Nelson Bubble Lamp is one of his greatest contributions to mid century style, but he is known for designing other iconic pieces as well. The marshmallow sofa, coconut chair, and ball clock are three noteworthy furnishings he designed. Aside from his personal contributions to mid century modern style, he is known for his associations with other key figures of mid century style like Ray and Carles Eames, Herman Miller, and Eliot Noyes.
These modern lights often feature shades shaped like balls, saucers, cigars, pears, or other shapes with rounded edges. George Nelson Bubble Lamps are available as mid century modern pendant lights, modern white pendant lights, mid century table lamps, and mid century floor lamps. Each of these lighting types takes inspiration from rounded geometric shapes and incorporates them as the light’s primary draw.
George Nelson is considered the founder of the modernism style, so the lamps often fall into that style. However, they also suit mid century modern, modern, and contemporary homes because of their focus on geometric shapes and unique artistry. With their light color palettes and soft edges, Nelson Bubble Lamps can even expand to convey mid century coastal style or mid century boho styles.
