Modern picture lights are mountable lights that hang above artwork to highlight it through intentional lighting. These types of lights are often seen at galleries and museums to show off their artwork and direct light specifically onto it. In terms of appearance, they often are a linear light and have an adjustable head to point your light where it’s needed.
One of the key aspects for choosing a picture light is the dimensions of the light. For portrait pictures, your light should be about half the width of the picture. For landscape art, the light should be anywhere between a third and a half of the picture’s width. Once the scale is decided, you can focus on choosing a light that matches the aesthetic of the frame and artwork.
There are several different types and styles of modern picture lights to consider. The most common style is a rod lamp that has a linear light running parallel to the frame, but within that, you have lights that are modern, vintage, coastal, elegant, and other styles.
Modern picture lights are better than regular picture lights because of their attention to style and practicality. Modern picture lights are designed to be easy to shift and move around to shine light exactly where you need it to. In fact, modern linear lights typically extend past the frame or canvas while more traditional picture lights tend to be more narrow and cover only the art itself (if it even successfully covers the entire piece).
Contemporary picture lights are specifically made for that purpose and give you the flexibility and direction to perfectly shine a light on your favorite art.
Modern picture lights are often used over wall mounted photos so that the extra light is directed down and out into the rest of the room as opposed to shining faintly on the ceiling.
