What is The Sonneman Story?

Sonneman, also known as Sonneman - A Way of Light, has a story that began over five decades ago in the mid 1960’s. As a child, the company’s founder Robert Sonneman had a deep love for the art world and this love continued to blossom as he became a student of MoMA and the Whitney Museum. Afterward, he pursued an art degree at the Rhodes School and continued to take classes at the Art Students League.

When he began the company in 1967, Robert was both the founder and designer. His primary inspiration came from his love of modern architecture, the functional discipline of Bauhaus, and his own passion for art. When he created his first design in the 1960’s, he introduced a modern aesthetic to the lighting world and challenged the industry’s older practices of design and manufacturing. His company Sonneman Lighting continues to challenge the norms and create lighting fixtures unlike any other.

The most iconic designer of Sonneman Lighting is Robert Sonneman himself. Even now in his late 70’s, Sonneman continues to design new lights for his company.
