What is The Foscarini Lighting Story?

Forscarini lighting was founded in an area rich in glass history. In 1291, the Venetian government ordered glass makers to move their furnaces to Murano, an island in the lagoon of the Northside of Venice, for fire safety. It is on this island where glassmakers worked for centuries to refine their techniques and passed the craft from generation to generation. With that, Murano became the home of glass crafts.

Jumping ahead in time to 1981, on this same island, the Italian company of Foscarini was founded as a lighting company. Two years after their founding, the company’s first catalog of lamps was released by designers Carlo Urbinati and Alessandro Vecchiato. The catalog was a resounding success and led the company to great heights and depths in their designs and use of materials. Although many Foscarini lights still highlight glass as a main material, they have expanded to working with other materials and have tailored them to fit into their luxurious contemporary Italian brand.

Who are Foscarini Lighting's Most Iconic Designers

Two of the most iconic designers within Foscarini Lighting are Carlo Urbinati and Alessandro Vecchiato, who were the designers featured in the first catalog and the eventual owners of the company. Outside of the company’s staff, Forscarini has partnered with other famous designers such as Ludovica, Roberto Palomba, Tord Boontje, Luca Nichetto, and other prominent artists.
