Maxim Lighting did not begin as the large, multi-generational brand that it is today. The story of Maxim Lighting truly begins in 1965, when company founder Jacob Sperling was in the United States studying with his student visa. While his classes were focused on aeronautics, Sperling spent his nights in his garage building lighting fixtures. His knowledge and passion for the area came from his day job with a lighting retailer, and in his garage, he used these skills to craft innovative lighting products.
Sperling’s popularity and reputation grew widely, and he quickly realized that his garage and station wagon weren’t enough to maintain this growing business. He invited his brother Zvi Sperling to join him, and by 1975, the two offered over 150 unique lighting products and made over one million dollars in revenue.
Today, Maxim Lighting employs over 400 craftspeople, lighting specialists, support staff, and others to help them in their mission to provide innovative, artistic fixtures to homes in the United States and all around the world. They are supported by their skilled teams and the next generation of Sperlings.
The most iconic designer of Maxim Lighting is Jacob Sperling himself, who established the brand’s aesthetic and utility at an early stage. While the other designers who partner with him and create lights within the brand often go unnamed, their designs speak for themselves as they encompass everything that Sperling passionately includes in his own fixtures.
Since Maxim Lighting has existed for over 50 years, they have had plenty of time to develop different types of lighting fixtures. Some favorites include outdoor lighting, pendant lights, outdoor wall lights and sconces, and landscape lighting. Aside from their long history and multi-generational family involvement, Maxim Lighting is known for some of the revolutionary programs they have begun. In 2003, Jacob and Zvi launched the Maxim Lighting Builder’s Group, which focused on giving workers in the construction and home-building industry a network of manufacturer sales representatives to partner with them. They have also launched another program called ET2 Contemporary Lighting: a brand that brought Maxim Lighting to commercial and hospitality industries.
Maxim Lighting is based in the City of Industry in California, where they continue to design and craft their unique fixtures.
