The Matthews Fan Company story begins with unexpected inspiration. In 1986, the company’s founder Chuck Matthews was visiting a Sao Paulo restaurant and felt his eye drawn to a unique ceiling fan. By sheer luck, the friend that he was visiting in the region knew the manufacturing manager of that fan and introduced them. This introduction enabled Matthews to tour the manufacturing facility and get to know the designer of the fan, Geraldo Barros. Although Matthews’ beginnings in the industry were him casually selling Barros’ fans to friends and family, he eventually became a larger distributor and then opened his own ceiling fan company in Chicago.
Since the founding of Matthews Fan Company in 1992, Chuck Matthews has been designing fans fitting for the industry at large by combining machine age aesthetics, masterful metalwork, and beautiful designs to create his company’s unique aesthetic.
The most noteworthy designer of Mathews Fan Company Ceiling Fans would be the company’s founder Chuck Matthews. The other designers of the brand are part of an internal design team and often remain anonymous within the company’s brand. However, this internal structure and dedicated team enables all the designers to collaborate with one another and create fans that belong within the company’s established style.
Within Matthews Fans Company ceiling fans, there are various options to choose from to become instant fan favorites, featuring both indoor ceiling fans and outdoor ceiling fans. Their fans cover a wide territory to include fans with lights, directional ceiling fans, ceiling fans with multiple heads, wall fans, and other variations.
The company has created many classic fans and fan collections, but some favorite collections include Irene, Diane, and Acqua. The Irene Collection features a more rustic look that has been modified to fit into a modern landscape, while the Diane Collection showcases ceiling fans that are perfect for optimizing airflow and fitting a vintage industrial style. Finally, Acqu carries on that vintage industrial style but does so with various finishes, dual heads, and unique designs.
Aside from Chuck Matthews’ original source of inspiration in that Sao Paulo restaurant, he also designs many of his fans based on airplane propellers. In his time in Sao Paulo, he came to know Geraldo Barros, a retired commercial pilot and designer who was inspired by the propeller on his plane. Barros was the one who originally designed that noteworthy fan that Matthews fell in love with, and in that spirit, Matthews has utilized the same inspiration in many of his creations.
The headquarters for Matthews Fan Company is based in Libertyville, Illinois and serves as one of the last remaining US based fan manufacturers.
