For a modern dining room chandelier or one located above a kitchen island, the fixture should hang approximately 30-36” above the table. In the foyer, bedroom or living room, chandeliers should have a clearance for at least 7 feet from the bottom to the floor to prevent someone from bumping their head. 

Do chandeliers need extra ceiling support?

Some styles of chandeliers can be heavier than a typical ceiling light fixture. If you aren’t able to screw into a joist, you might consider having a professional install additional bracing to support the weight of your new chandelier.
